The cigar humidor is a box, tower and sometimes even an entire room designed to store and age these fine hand rolled smokes within an optimal humidity range of somewhere around 70%. Humidors must also contain a humidifier or humidifying system that maintains proper moisture levels, either by adding or removing moisture from the air inside the box. Typically this is performed with the assistance of a hygrometer that constantly measures the humidity levels.
Cigar humidors designed for personal use typically hold 20, 25, 50 or 100 smokes although smaller travel varieties and larger tower or cabinet models are available for storing less or more cigars, as needed. Usually constructed of wood, the exteriors are often crafted from fine materials like oak and cherry, some with glass tops in order to easily view current inventory. Regardless the materials used on the exterior of the boxes, the interiors are almost always lined with Spanish cedar.
The cigar humidor is, however, much more than just a storage box. Sure, its primary function is that of storing, preserving and aging fine smokes for years. But, it is often times an attractive and elegant piece of furniture, a conversation piece and even a family heirloom. For most cigar aficionados, humidors represent a relatively small investment designed to protect a much larger more valuable investment for many years.
This is particularly important when one considers smokes beyond the standard cheap brands commonly available. After all, if you puff a Cuban, a Cohiba, an Arturo Fuente, a Davidoff, Montecristo or Macanudo; and, if you own a decent sized stash of these fine smokes, a well made humidor just makes sense. |
